Youth Soccer Drills - 5 Things You Must Know

What if I told you that it is necessary that you design a practice schedule that prepares and supports the development of the players? Youth soccer drills designed to augment player's skills must be performed if the players have to reach a given level of success.

Practice sessions in youth soccer coaching should include suitable drills that help players learn the basics. This calls for adequate stretching and warm-up before starting the practice sessions. By doing the stretching and warm-up exercises players ready their body to take the physical stress in practice.

Every practice session should necessarily have an explicit objective. Therefore, classify just one or two drills and work upon those drills only. Draw your training plan in a manner that requires you to cover a different set of drills every single week. Once the players start playing the game, have them perform the drills that help spot those skills where they need practice.

Most of the matches are won by one team because the opposing team tends to wear out towards the end. For this reason, make sure that your fitness training include drills where a soccer ball is used a great deal.

You can divide your youth soccer practice session into two groups. It may be cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength that results in developing agility, strength, co-ordination, speed, and quickness in the players.

The pitching all happens with the release. When this is happening just: · Stay Tall · Pull your shoulders back · Have a firm front side · No bending at the waist

For lower body pitching mechanics: · Make a powerful push from the pitching rubber · Build up a strong, fast and long stride · Make a push-back against the stride leg as the pitching arm comes down through the release point

To maximize your pitching speed, you must: · Make sure that your upper body is upright when at the release · You push back against your stride leg · Your shoulders should most of the time way closed · Your hips should be halfway or less closed at the release

The power, the speed And landing, stride length determines how effectively you can push back on stride length to throw the ball with speed.

The faster pace depends on the lower body of a pitcher. Remember to always improve the speed and control of jump styles. The crux of the style fast and strong drive to be pushed out of the Pitching Rubber leg step swift and far.

Time to leave the power and check the speed as stride lengthfor a blocking or a hard push against the stride leg at the end of the pitch sequence. Ideally, your pitching strides must be precise and sure so that a powerful pitching technique will be achieved.

A Beginner's Guide to Football and Some Basic Good to Know Drills

Learning the Basics of Catching a Low Football Pass

Execution on a football field starts with practice. One situation that happens a lot in a game is catching the low passes. One not so perfect scenario is a low passed catch. First keep the pinkies together down low to make a shovel. This technique stops the ball from bouncing away and also helps the player scoop up the ball quickly. Second, keep low to the ground as a reference your knees should be level with your elbows, and if this means that you are down on all fours better a complete and no extra yards than an incomplete pass. Third, once the ball touches your hands scoop it up into your chest and tuck it away into a secure position. Use your hands and not your body. Never use your body to catch a football. Last, concentrate on catching it first and then worry about the defense, and scoring some more yards.

Prevent fumbles with strong techniques

One of the fundamental aspects of running with a football is ball security. There is nothing worse than almost getting a first down or even a touchdown and fumbling the ball, for this reason there is a great need for ball security. Basic ball security can be broken down into four steps. First grab the football with your carrying hand with the tips of the football being covered with your fingers. Second, wrap your forearm completely around the football. Third point is to have the ball held tight against the bicep to prevent defenders from punching up through from behind. The final point is keeping the football high and tight against the ribcage. Run a couple of drills were the ball carrier runs through a pack of defenders to practice. By reducing the risk of a fumble you will increase the offensive strength in effectively driving across the field and scoring touchdowns.

A great Handoff Drill

Running backs should constantly practice the hand off. One great hand off drill starts by having two separate lines of players facing each other: line A and line B. The player from line A leaves the line with the football running towards line B. At the same time a player leaves line B, and when they meet in the middle Player A hands off the ball to Player B. At this moment another player leaves line A and accepts a handoff from player B. The motion should be constantly moving from one line to another in this drill, almost like a juggling pattern. It is an effective drill to teach handoff skills and help running backs achieve higher accuracy and consistency.

Around the world: Improved Ball Handling

Ball handling is one of the most vital skills that a player can have on the field, and this drill's goal is to help players get a better feel and control for the football. Players will move the football from one hand to another hand around differing parts of their body. The drill starts with the head moving the ball in a circular motion from hand to hand, then proceeds to go under the arms, around the waist, then the knees, and finally through and in between the players legs.

In this drill the coaches responsibility is to observe the smoothness of the drill, and to also shout commands of body positions to move the ball around, and also to reverse the direction of the football. Changing the direction of the football ensures that they don't form a habit, and that they remained focused on the ball and controlling the movement.

At the very end of the drill the players will do several simple drops. This means that the player will drop the football and retrieve it again quickly. To further increase pickup skills have your players change up the hands that they are using so that both their strong and weak hands are developed.

Basketball Shooting Drills - 3 Essential Things Your Shooting Drills Should Do

Every coach wants to see every player on the team progress and become good shooters. They want to see decent form, accuracy and consistency. And it isn't difficult to convince players that practice is a good thing - walk past any basketball court on a Saturday morning, and if there isn't a game on there will be players scattered around the baskets practicing their shot. Maybe even practicing their shooting form like their coach told them.

But shooting in a practice or by yourself at a neighborhood court is very different to shooting in a game. In a game, a player's shooting form needs to be automatic - they can't be thinking about how to shoot, trying to get their elbows under the ball, gauging the arc needed. The shooting technique needs to come naturally, which is why coaches stress perfect practice, over and over.

It's called muscle memory - if you make your muscles perform in the same way, same set of movements, repetitively, they will naturally perform those movements whenever the player starts the shooting motion. Basic shooting drills need to emphasize this - good mechanics, good form, every time.

But there are a few other aspects to shooting - other than decent shooting form - that are necessary for shooting success in a game, and this is what your more advanced shooting drills need to accomplish. More advanced shooting drills need to include focus on:

1. A quick release. When an offensive play is run well, and a player is able to ditch his defensive man by running him off a pick or giving him a good fake, the offensive player will pop into position alone, ready for the pass. But he'll only have a second or two alone, and so when that pass comes, the offensive player needs to be ready to turn and fire immediately - not rushed, but calm and smooth. To be calm and sure when shooting under fire, the player needs to practice like this - he needs to practice receiving the pass, squaring to the hoop, bringing the ball up and shooting - all in one clean, quick motion. Because if he waits any longer, the defense will be on him.

2. Good court vision. Sometimes it's a good time to shoot; sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's better to fake and drive. And sometimes someone else is in a better position to shoot and they should get the pass. Good court vision means seeing what is happening all around you, and adjusting accordingly. Have players run drills in which they have to choose - e.g., in one-on-one situations, if the defensive man charges, the offensive player fakes a shot and drives on him; but if the defensive man lays back, the offensive player takes the shot. Practice reading the defense.

3. Choosing your shot. Players need to shoot from where they would in the game. Big men will rarely be taking three point shots; similarly, guards will rarely be trying a drop step inside the key. Why waste valuable practice time teaching skills to players who will almost certainly not be given the opportunity to use them in a game.

A player on the court who can't be trusted to shoot is a black hole for the team - nobody wants to give him the ball. And while good form is important to a consistent shot and needs to be taught and reinforced, if a player doesn't have a quick release, an eye for the court, and a knowledge of his shooting strengths, even the best form will fall flat more times than not.

Choose shooting drills that provide opportunity for your players to do this if you want them prepared for the game. For more basketball shooting drills, check out Basketball Shooting Drills from the Better Basketball Coaching website.

Baseball Drills

Baseball drills are a very important part of the baseball training. It is vitally important to work at drills on a regular basis. This will ensure your technique is constantly being improved and any problems that you may have in your playing style and technique can be addressed.

It is not always easy to know where your weaknesses are until you break your game down into components and work on drills for each. Regardless of your age, experience and playing level, these exercises will pin point your strengths and weaknesses and go a long to improving the areas where things are not too good. A good coach will have a wide choice of drills which he will be able to set for players so that, not only will you improve your game, but also, he will be able to see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. This is important for him when making team structure decisions.

It is vital that the coach has a planned and organised attitude towards drills. It can be very time wasting when you are at practice if the coach has to start thinking about how best to improve aspects of your game. He will probably have a book and, no doubt, a head full of drills. These will have been picked up over his years of experience and I am sure that he will remember using them at various points when he was being coached himself. There are very few drills which a coach has devised himself. He may well have modified some quite a lot, but most of them will be ones that he has seen other coaches using or ones that he has used when training. Coaches are always on the look out for new drills which they can use for their own team.

If you are the coach of a small team and do not have a huge store of drills already in your head, the internet is a wonderful tool for you. There are many websites which give you detailed information on baseball drills for all the disciplines. Many of these include diagrams and some have video footage of the drills. The websites will usually break them down into hitting, bunting, base running, pitching, catching, throwing and team categories. It is very interesting to see other people's drills as you can learn all sorts of tricks. Often you will come across the old favourites time and time again, but every now and then something new will appear which you will not have considered.

As baseball drills are such an important part of training and are so essential for improving player's techniques and skills, time must always be spent in making sure that they are executed correctly. If this time is spent on the foundation of techniques then it will be so much easier to perform well in match conditions.

Five Simple Soccer Drills For Kids

Around the Clock
Divide the kids into groups of 5 players. The four corners of a 15 yard square should be manned by one player a piece while a fifth player has the ball at the center of square. The ball should now be passed to one of the corners after which the child that was at the center of the square should trade places with any other corner player not in possession of the ball. The player who has just received the ball should now pass it back to the new center player. The drill can be repeated as many times as the kids can stand and is great for helping improve pass quality and spacing issues.

Simon Says
With a ball each players dribble their way around a 20x20 yard grid (you can mark it with cones) waiting for "Simon's" instructions. These can include "foot" which would mean stop the ball with the foot (of course) "change direction" "run faster" and so on and so forth. Any player who fails to obey an instruction prefaced by "Simon says" is out, with the winner being the last child on pitch. Kids have a lot of fun with this drill and it can be modified to teach any number of skills.

Shuttle Passing
This is a drill for groups of three players. After the groups are decided two players should stand about 20 yards apart from one another while the third team member stands in the middle between two marker cones. Each player has their own ball.

On your mark the middle player runs towards an end player calling for the ball. The end player then passes the ball to the middle players feet and he or she must return it as accurately and quickly as possible. This achieved they then run towards the other end player to repeat the process. The drill should continue until all three players on the team have been the middle man at least once. You can make it a little more competitive for all by awarding a reward for the team with the most completed passes.

Soccer Marbles
Soccer Marbles improves offensive and defensive skills. Begin by marking off a 10X10 area with cones and dividing the kids into groups of 3. Each child has a ball and two are designated as defenders while the other is the attacker. The attacker than dribbles his ball around the space while the two defenders attempt to hit his ball with their own. Once the attackers ball has been hit the players rotate places.

After ten minutes or so, up the ante for the attackers. Let the defending players pick up their balls and roll them at the attacker's ball. This really helps the attacker learn about defending both the ball and himself. The coach should time how long each player maintains procession of his ball, and the player with the best time wins.

Pass, Move, Turn
This drill is also a great warm up before a match.
Have half your players stand within the confines of a 20x20 grid, while the other half stand around the perimeter. Players in the grid have no soccer balls, those on the outside have one each. Players within the grid move around freely looking to receive a pass from an outside player and return it accurately before moving on to another challenge from another "outsider" at the opposite end of the grid. Switch the outside and inside players after about ten minutes.

To add more of a challenge for older players, determine how balls should be returned. One touch or two touch pass? Return it with the outside or inside of the foot?

Jump Shot Drills

Baseline Dribble Jumper

With the baseline dribble drill, you line up on the wings with the ball. Take two hard dribbles toward the baseline and shoot the ball. Focus on two types of shots, one off the dribble and one off a jump-stop. Shooting off the dribble is tricky without practicing and not everyone can do it. The ball must be dribbled and brought right up into the jump shot. This is an effective play because the defender believes you are going to continue to drive but you go up for the shot instead. Many times the defender is off-balance.

The second type is the most common, which is the jump-stop. This is done when you take your second dribble. You take a mini hop and land on both feet. Go straight up for the shot and you'll have it. If you are a coach, I suggest forming lines on both sides of the key. One side shoots off the dribble and the other side shoots off the jump stop. Make sure you trade sides so that each player can learn how to shoot off either hand. This drill doesn't need to be forced to the baseline as it can be performed wherever, but it leads into our next drill.

Back the Ball off Jumper

I coach players to practice game situations. The reason that I push guards toward the baseline is because it is a common area of shooting and secondly, guards tend to get trapped there. Defenses either force players to the baseline or force them to the help. If the defense is forcing to the baseline then the player tends to get trapped and get in trouble. I coach players to back the ball off when they feel pressure. This is done by immediately taking two hard dribbles back in the same direction that you've already come. Some coaches will tell the guards to perform a spin move to get out of the pressure, but the spin move forces the guard to turn his back and lose vision for a second. That's what this drill is for. Have the guards take two hard dribbles toward the baseline only to take two hard dribbles back in the same direction. The ball should remain in the proper hand the entire time. Once they get back to their original position have them immediately execute a crossover into a jump shot. The crossover can be between the legs or low and in front of the knees. Whatever it is it needs to be performed quickly. I coach this because defenses tend to relax when a player gives ground and as an offensive player you need to attack when they relax. The shot can be taken off the dribble or off the jump-stop. It should be practiced full speed both ways.

Crease or Seam Jumper

The most common shot against a zone defense is the seam or crease jump shot. This is a shot in between the gaps of the zone. It can also be performed against a man to man defense but is most effective when the defender is trying to play catch up, meaning he is trailing you. Rick (Rip) Hamilton is the king of the crease jumper. He shoots more shots from the elbow at 17 feet than any other player in the NBA and is a wonder to watch. To practice this drill simply line up on both sides at the wings. Players on the right side will use their left hand and players on the left side will use their right hand. Take one or two dribbles to the area right by the foul line extended. Use a jump-stop or come off a dribble and shoot the jump shot. Against a zone, you'll find that you'll shoot this shot off a jump-stop while against a man you'll shoot it more often off the dribble.

These are all simple easy drills that I've used throughout my life. These can be practiced in a team setting or in an individual setting.

Baseball Hitting Drills

That One's Outta There!

Nothing quite beats the sound of a bat cracking a pitch so perfectly that the batter barely even needs to look up to see it's out of the park. A satisfying smile creeps across the batter's face as they toss the vibrating bat aside, jogging the rounds of the bases with pride. The following baseball hitting drills aim to improve your team's batting skills so that more players can experience the joy of cracking one out of the park.

Have your players perform the following hitting exercise at every practice to help them build muscle memory in the crucial lower body region. Each hitter takes a bat, places it behind their back and while gripping the bat firmly assume their hitting stance.

Next, have players take a stride inwards, then remove the top hand and use it to pull the bat around their waist. At this time, players are rolling up on their back foot and their knees and abdomen should be facing outwards, towards where the pitcher would be situation. From here, have players resume their normal stance before repeating 10 times. Players will begin to feel the improvements in their lower body muscles after just a few practices.

Arm Isolation

The first of the baseball hitting drills can be used to strengthen arm muscles and improve hitter confidence by hitting the ball using only one hand on the bat. Make sure that batter begin with the lead hand choked very high up the bat. Weaker players may need to place the hand from their weaker arm in the armpit of the batter arm for extra power and support.

Before attempting to hit, have players swing the bat a few times with just their lead arm. Make sure approach the pitches with caution, staying back on the ball as much as possible. Allow each player 5 successful hits before switching arms and performing double the reps with the weaker arm to build additional strength. After adding this to your arsenal of drills, players will ideally develop equal arm strength in each arm, or at least build crucial muscle memory in their weaker arm.

Don't Hit the Chair

The next of the baseball hitting drills is perfect if you have a number of players on your team who cut too far upwards when hitting. To set up the drill, set up a batting tee at home plate and a folding chair behind the tee. The seat of the chair should be facing the tee and the tee should be slightly lower than the back of the chair.

Have your hitter approach the plate and assume their normal stance just behind the chair. Players are to swing and hit the ball through the hole in the chair, forcing players to accommodate a downward angle to their swing. I like to use metal folding chairs for this drill because of the loud sound made when players fail to add enough downward arc to their swing. This drill is great for players looking to develop their line drive hits as they are shown the ideal spot to hit the ball to produce such a result.

Basketball Drills to Improve Your Skill

If you have ever played a game of competitive basketball, you know how demanding the sport can be, even in a recreational game. Trying to stop a quick and aggressive player, chasing down a loose ball, and then maintaining the finesse needed to put the right touch on a shot... all of this requires the right kind of practice. Conditioning, repetition, and power are key components that should be included in any basketball training program.

Basketball demands that you are not only in great shape, but that you can handle the ball while running yourself ragged. Simply running and improving cardio capacity will not help you handle the ball when it comes to you. Dual purpose drills will help you mast two skills at once so you're ready for game time. Most basketball players are familiar with ladders or suicide drills: starting at one baseline, run to the first free throw line, touch it, and return. Then sprint to the half-court line, and return. Then sprint to the 2nd free throw line, return, and then sprint baseline to baseline. You can add another dimension by dribbling a basketball during this drill. When you reach one of the turn-around points, switch your dribbling hand. This is not only great for endurance; it will help improve your ball handling with both your dominant and non-dominant hand.

Everyone recognizes the importance of a great shot, but they rarely practice proper form enough for it to translate to a game. Since a game moves quickly, there is rarely time to think about your form. That's where muscle memory comes in. The more your muscles repeat the same set of movements, the more that they will naturally perform those movements in other situations. Make sure you devote enough time to your practice to focus on proper form so that it comes naturally when you need to make that game-winning jumper.

A winning team not only scores more points, it usually wins the battle of the boards. Height is an obvious advantage when trying to grab a rebound from your opponent, but power can help overcome what you lack in size. Some basic drills to help improve that vertical leap are the explosive leap and repeated broad jumps. Explosive leaps involve squatting down and exploding into the air as high as possible with your arms stretched above your head. Come down, pause for a second, and repeat. This can be done as two-legged jumps or one-legged jumps. To perform repeated broad jumps, stand with your legs shoulder width apart, and then jump as high and as far as possible. When you land, make a quick turn and then jump again. Both of these drills should be performed on a softer surface like grass to avoid putting too much stress on your joints.

Whether you play in a structured league or with some buddies at the part, a little commitment to conditioning, repetition and power, you should notice significant improvement will help you become the dominant player you strive to be.

Three Important Fastpitch Hitting Drills

Three Important Hitting Drills

Hitting a softball is one of the hardest things to do in all of sports. It takes very good eye to hand coordination. It takes great timing, talent, and a bit of luck (sometimes) too. For a player to maximize her chances of being the best hitter she can possibly be, she should regularly go through some hitting drills. Three important hitting drills every player should do are "Hitting off a Tee", "Self Toss and Hit", and "Side Soft Toss".

Many players, unless they're under the age of 12 or so, view hitting off a tee as being too childish, but it isn't. In fact, players of all ages and all capabilities should always hit off a tee. This helps hitters to work on their form as they take their stance, swing, hit the ball, and then follow through. With the help of the coach, problems can quickly be identified and corrected during this hitting drill.

Another important hitting drill is the Self Toss and Hit drill. This drill simply involves the hitter tossing up a ball and then hitting it. The hitters should toss the ball close to their body, farther away from their body, and everywhere in between. Also, the batter should hit the ball when it's high in the strike zone, low in the strike zone, and everywhere in between. This way the hitter can get used to swinging at the ball in all these different positions. The point of this hitting drill is for the batter to once again work on the mechanics with her swing and the drill will also help develop better eye to hand coordination.

The third important hitting drill is the Side Soft Toss. This drill requires a pair of players. One player will hit while the other player will toss the ball. The player hitting will assume her stance and get ready to hit. The other player will stand off to the side a few feet (close but not so close that the bat can reach her) with a softball or a bucket of softballs. The player with the ball will lightly toss the ball into the strike zone of the hitter. The hitter will then put a good swing on the ball and hit it forward. Once again this is a great hitting drill for developing eye to hand coordination and for helping a hitter develop good mechanics.

Hitting is probably the single hardest thing to do during a softball game. It takes a player with good eye to hand coordination, good timing, and good mechanics to be able to hit the ball consistently. Three important hitting drills that will help players become better hitters are "Hitting off a Tee", "Self Toss and Hit", and "Side Soft Toss".

The technique of shooting should come naturally, why stress perfect practice coach, over and over again.
